Voluntary Car Schemes

The Culm scheme was setup in 1987 and the Tiverton scheme in 1989. They exist to provide lifts in cars for frail elderly people and people with disabilities who find public transport extremely difficult, either because they cannot walk to the bus stop or easily climb on or off the bus.

Transport is provided by volunteers using their own cars. It may not always be possible to arrange a lift as all the drivers are volunteers and cannot be expected to turn out on every occasion, although they will always do their best.

Arrange a journey

Call us on 01884 242099, Monday to Thursday from 9am to 5pm and Friday from 9am to 4.30pm. If we are unable to take your call please leave your name and telephone number and we will ring back. Please try to give at least 24 hours notice.

The co-ordinator can advise on the cost of arrangements which differ from a usual journey. Special charging arrangements may be required on some occasions (e.g. if one return journey for a passenger entails two return journeys for the driver.

Voluntary Accessible Car

This is a Fiat Scudo car which has four seats, ramp and tracking and is designed to accommodate a wheelchair in safety and comfort.

It is available to fill the gap between the Ring & Ride Bus and the Voluntary Car Scheme. It is intended for use by passengers who need to use wheelchairs, or who find getting in or out of a car difficult or impossible.

The car is driven by volunteers. It may not always be possible to arrange a lift, as all drivers are volunteers and cannot be expected to turn out on every occasion, although they will always do their best.

Who can use the car?

Frail elderly people or people with a disability who find public transport very difficult to use. Passengers may bring an escort.
